Happy Birthday!
So, tomorrow marks my first anniversary in Los Angeles. This has been the quickest year of my life. Seems like just yesterday that Nicole, Mary Beth, and I packed up my car on a snowy day in Chicago and made our way across the country stopping in St. Louis, Albuquerque, and the Grand Canyon before landing in Santa Monica. L.A. has certainly taken some getting used to. I thought that I’d be a lot further along by now, but I soon realized that the process is much slower than I had imagined and that I’m actually way ahead of the game.
In the last month, things have really started picking up. I’m shooting a small part in a pilot presentation (That means they’re going to shoot it before they sell it — and it will get sold. The script is hilarious!) by John Quaintance. (Dude works A LOT http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1735367/). I get to be pregnant which means I don’t have to worry about losing weight - yay!
Auditions are picking up, too, and I’ve lost the crazy nervous jitters I used to get. Now, I feel good about presenting my best work in the short couple of minutes in the room. And it seems to be working…
I’ve got two awesome improv groups and a sketch group that keep me very happy and sate my desire for live performance. Oh, and I get to perform with one of my comedy heroes (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0929609/) on a regular basis.
My writing has been more prolific than ever. I’ve been working on new characters, sketches, and songs. Some of these should be making an appearance on this very site in the near future…once I can find the time to actually film them.
I’ve met many wonderful, supportive friends who have helped me through this tumultuous year. Sure, there are a lot of jerks in L.A., but there are also some really incredible people who would give you the metaphorical shirt off their backs.
Overall, I would say I’m very happy with the move across country. I was content in Chicago, but I’ve had this desire to perform and write for a living for my entire life. Having the opportunity to pursue that now wholeheartedly is a gift I do not take for granted. Thanks, L.A. Can’t wait to see what the next year holds for us.
